Summary
The Umbwe Route is the steepest and most challenging way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. We recommend this route only for very experienced hikers. It typically takes 6 to 7 days, starting at Umbwe Gate and quickly ascending through dense rainforest. The route then follows a steep ridge before joining the Machame Route near the Barranco Camp. From there, it continues through the Barranco Valley, up to Barafu Camp, and onward to the summit, Uhuru Peak. Though tough, it offers breathtaking views and a sense of adventure for those looking for a more intense and less crowded climb.
